Engineered for Performance: Precision Structural Fabrication Supporting Critical Infrastructure Supporting critical industrial infrastructure is fundamentally different from manufacturing conventional structural steel. The structural frames developed for this project were required to act as the primary support platform for specialist equipment where dimensional accuracy directly influenced overall system performance.
The Story
As the global plastics industry searches for practical solutions to recycle materials once considered unrecoverable, Turmec was selected by Impact Recycling to manufacture one of the most critical components within its advanced plastics separation technology.
The project involved the design, fabrication, full assembly and factory testing of a bespoke stainless steel process drum destined for Syklo Finland, one of Europe's leading innovators in plastics recycling.
This was only the second machine of its kind ever produced, with the first having been manufactured directly by Impact Recycling themselves. Turmec was entrusted to take this highly specialised concept and transform it into a production-ready piece of industrial equipment capable of operating reliably within a commercial recycling facility.
Delivering Precision for Next Generation Recycling:
Impact Recycling has developed an innovative process that transforms difficult-to-recycle mixed plastic waste into high-purity recycled materials suitable for reuse in manufacturing.
At the centre of this process sits the rotating stainless steel separation drum.
Although visually simple, the drum performs an extremely demanding role where dimensional accuracy, fabrication quality and rotational performance are fundamental to achieving consistent material separation.
Every aspect of manufacture required exceptional engineering precision.
The stainless steel drum had to be fabricated with tight tolerances while maintaining perfect alignment across its full length to ensure stable operation and long service life.
Why It Should Win
This submission represents engineering excellence with global impact.
The project demonstrates Turmec's ability to manufacture highly specialised process equipment where quality cannot be compromised.Turmec was trusted to manufacture only the second machine of its kind for one of the world's most innovative plastics recycling companies. Through precision engineering, bespoke fabrication and complete factory testing, the company delivered a critical component that enables difficult-to-recycle plastics to become valuable, high-purity recycled materials.
The project perfectly demonstrates how advanced Irish engineering is helping to solve one of the world's greatest environmental challenges—creating practical, scalable technology that supports the transition to a true circular economy.
Key engineering achievements included:
Precision fabrication of the stainless steel process drum
Robust structural fabrication supporting heavy rotating equipment
High-quality welding and dimensional control
Modular construction to simplify transportation and installation
Complete factory testing before shipment
From Engineering Model to Operational Machine
Rather than supplying fabricated components alone, Turmec delivered a complete engineering solution.
The project included:
Detailed engineering and manufacturing
Precision stainless steel fabrication
Structural steel support framework
Full mechanical assembly
Factory acceptance testing at Turmec
Operational running prior to shipment
Preparation for installation in Finland
By assembling and running the complete machine before dispatch, Turmec significantly reduced commissioning risk for the customer and ensured every component functioned exactly as intended before leaving Ireland.
This project represents far more than excellent fabrication.
It demonstrates how Irish engineering can enable breakthrough recycling technologies on an international stage.
Working with Impact Recycling, Turmec successfully translated an innovative prototype into a commercially manufactured solution capable of supporting advanced plastics recovery in Finland.
