OMC Technologies successfully fabricated 106 structural stainless steel pipe racks for an API manufacturing facility in Denmark. Manufactured from 600 tonnes of EN 10088-4 Grade 304 stainless steel and built to Execution Class 3 standards, the project was delivered through close collaboration with the client, achieving high-quality and efficient project outcomes.

The Story

OMC Technologies was awarded a major contract for the manufacture and supply of 106 stainless steel pipe racks, a project that demonstrated the company's expertise in large-scale stainless steel fabrication, quality management, and project delivery. From the initial procurement stage through to final dispatch, the project required careful planning, coordination, and adherence to stringent industry standards to ensure that every pipe rack met the client's technical and quality requirements.

The project commenced with the sourcing and procurement of a substantial volume of stainless steel materials. In total, approximately 15,000 metres of 150 x 8 mm square hollow section (SHS) and 5,000 metres of 120 x 4 mm SHS were required, in addition to 36 tonnes of stainless steel plate material. Given the critical nature of the application, all materials were supplied with full certification to EN 10088-4, ensuring compliance with the required mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and material traceability standards.

Following material procurement, the fabrication phase involved the cutting, preparation, and assembly of the pipe rack components. The project presented significant manufacturing challenges due to the volume of fabrication required and the strict quality standards specified by the client. Across the 106 pipe racks, a total of approximately 17,000 welds were completed by OMC Technologies’ skilled fabrication team. Maintaining consistency and quality across such a large number of welds required rigorous welding procedures, qualified personnel, and continuous quality monitoring throughout production.

To ensure the highest level of workmanship, all welds were inspected in accordance with the requirements of ISO 5817 Level B, one of the most demanding acceptance criteria for welded joints. This inspection regime provided assurance that the finished structures met the stringent quality expectations necessary for long-term performance in service. The successful completion of this inspection process reflected OMC Technologies’ commitment to delivering products that exceed industry standards and client expectations.

Once fabrication and inspection were complete, the pipe racks progressed to the finishing stage. A uniform 240-grit polished finish was applied to all visible stainless steel surfaces, providing both an attractive appearance and enhanced corrosion resistance. Achieving a consistent finish across all 106 units required careful attention to detail and a controlled polishing process to maintain quality and appearance throughout the project.

As a final quality measure, every pipe rack underwent chemical cleaning prior to dispatch. This process removed any surface contaminants introduced during fabrication and restored the protective chromium oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion-resistant properties. The passivation treatment ensured that each rack was delivered in optimal condition and ready for installation in its operating environment.

The successful completion of this project highlighted OMC Technologies’ capability to manage complex fabrication programmes involving significant material volumes, demanding quality standards, and extensive finishing requirements. Through effective project management, skilled workmanship, and a strong focus on quality assurance, OMC Technologies delivered all 106 stainless steel pipe racks to specification, demonstrating its reputation as a trusted supplier of high-quality stainless steel fabrication solutions.

Why It Should Win

We think this project is worthy of an award due to the volume , craftsmanship, and timescale to deliver such a project to the highest welding and testing standards . As an execution class 3 project , material traceability, welding inspections and testing were carried out to the highest levels. The frames were a combination of good design, good planning and excellent execution through the fabrication process.
