Portal Frame Steel and Cladding for housing automated Rail Car Inspection Scanning Machine

The Story

This project aimed to solve challenges of an ageing rail infrastructure whilst streamlining the maintenance detection process. Using cutting edge technology, data analytics and signal processing the scanner will establish both new and improved processes such as identifying damages and repair, post hazard assessments, speed up monitoring process, reduce labour times and minimize health and safety risks.

Working with our client on this project involved developing a bespoke housing to facilitate 3D scanner technology by Siemens. This housing required precision measurement tolerances to allow for the already existing Siemens technology. Within this scanner housing structure there was also a damper system on the main columns with the aim of reducing/eliminating vibrations from the track below. Each scanner structure has been designed and manufactured for installation directly over the tracks, allowing train carriages to pass through effortlessly. As the train enters the housing, the scanner carries out full compartmental scanning to identify any defects on the trains body that requires repairs.

Materials used in the project included:

• Mild Steel Sections for scanner interior structure

• Non reflective paint

• Cladding panels

Once the design and manufacturing stages were complete, each scanner structure was trial erected at our manufacturing facility, prior to transportation and installation on site. Our site team undertook specific PTS Training for project installation and completion on site whilst adhering to Iarnród Eireann’s track safety

Why It Should Win

This project involved cutting edge technology, innovation and special technical specifications to address and solve challenges in current rail infrastructure inspection/monitoring. Use of this new rail scanner replaces an ageing and outdated process which is time consuming, costly, inaccurate and labour intensive. This technology and scanner housing is one of the first prototypes completed by our client in Ireland.

We were very proud to be a part of this unique project to modernise the scanning of train carriages to an automated process. It was a project that was very outside our norm of structural and secondary steel projects, and it was fantastic opportunity to be part of a project which is forging our future infrastructure and utilising the advancement in technology.
