Heatguard Dairy Shed, Roscommon – Delivering a Bright, Cooler and More Efficient Livestock Environment Ryan Structural Steel supplied and installed a seven-bay agricultural shed in Roscommon featuring innovative Heatguard roof sheeting. Designed to maximise natural daylight while reducing solar heat gain, the project provides a durable, comfortable and energy-efficient environment for livestock, helping to improve animal welfare and farm productivity.

The Story

The Heatguard Dairy Shed project in Roscommon demonstrates how modern steel construction and innovative roofing technology can transform agricultural buildings for the benefit of both farmers and livestock.

Ryan Structural Steel was appointed to supply and install a seven-bay steel-framed livestock shed that would provide a durable, low-maintenance and future-proof facility capable of meeting the demands of a modern dairy enterprise. From the outset, the objective was clear: create a building that would maximise comfort for livestock, improve working conditions for farm staff and deliver long-term operational efficiency.

A key challenge in agricultural buildings is balancing natural light with temperature control. Traditional roofing materials can allow excessive solar heat gain during warmer periods, creating uncomfortable conditions for animals and increasing stress within the building. At the same time, reducing natural daylight can lead to a greater reliance on artificial lighting, increasing energy consumption and operating costs.

To address these challenges, Ryan Structural Steel incorporated Heatguard roof sheeting throughout the project. Heatguard's advanced design is characterised by a low G-Value, high light transmission and excellent impact resistance. The roofing material uses a specially developed pigment technology that reflects harmful UV rays and reduces overheating within the building.

By acting like a reflective barrier under direct sunlight, Heatguard minimises solar heat gain, helping to maintain a cooler and more consistent internal environment. This reduces the occurrence of hot spots within the shed and contributes to improved animal comfort and welfare. At the same time, the high level of natural light transmission creates a bright, welcoming interior that significantly reduces the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours.

The photographs highlight the success of this approach. Despite the large footprint of the building, natural daylight is distributed evenly throughout the interior, creating an open and highly functional environment. The combination of the steel frame structure and translucent Heatguard roof sheeting delivers both strength and efficiency while maintaining an attractive, modern appearance.

The project also required careful coordination during fabrication and installation to ensure the seven-bay structure was erected safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. Ryan Structural Steel's experience in agricultural construction enabled the team to deliver a robust solution tailored to the operational needs of the farm.

The completed shed now provides a bright, airy and comfortable space that supports livestock welfare while helping the farm reduce energy usage and improve overall efficiency. By combining proven structural engineering with innovative roofing technology, the project demonstrates how agricultural buildings can be designed to meet the challenges of modern farming while delivering measurable benefits for the end user.

This project reflects Ryan Structural Steel's commitment to quality, innovation and practical solutions that add long-term value for farming clients. The Heatguard Dairy Shed stands as an example of how thoughtful design and advanced materials can create a more sustainable and productive agricultural environment.

Why It Should Win

This project showcases how innovative building materials and expert steel construction can deliver real-world benefits for modern agriculture.

What sets the Heatguard Dairy Shed apart is its successful combination of structural excellence, livestock welfare and energy efficiency. The incorporation of Heatguard roof sheeting provides a practical solution to a common challenge in agricultural buildings: achieving high levels of natural daylight without increasing heat build-up.

The result is a bright, naturally lit environment that remains cooler and more comfortable for livestock, while reducing dependence on artificial lighting and supporting lower operating costs. The seven-bay structure was delivered to a high standard of workmanship and provides a durable, future-proof facility for the farm.

This project is more than a steel shed—it is a demonstration of how innovative thinking, modern materials and skilled construction can improve animal welfare, farm productivity and long-term sustainability. It represents the very best of agricultural building design and exemplifies Ryan Structural Steel's commitment to delivering practical, high-performance solutions for its clients.
