The Story
MPG Ironworks successfully detailed and erected the structural steelwork for the NUA Arklow Saw Building. Modelled entirely in Tekla, the robust frame seamlessly integrates with Kingspan cladding and accommodates heavy timber machinery, delivering a precision-engineered industrial facility
Why It Should Win
The NUA Arklow Saw Building project is a prime demonstration of MPG Ironworks' commitment to precision detailing and efficient structural execution. The core of our journey began in the detailing office, where the entire structure was modelled in 3D using Tekla software by K. McLoughlin. This comprehensive digital twin allowed us to meticulously plan the framework, which utilizes a variety of steel profiles including Universal Beams (UB), Parallel Flange Channels (PFC), and structural hollow sections (CHS and SHS) for robust cross-bracing.
One primary challenge was ensuring absolute spatial coordination for the end-user's manufacturing requirements. The building was purpose-built to house large-scale timber processing equipment, most notably a heavy-duty CT600F saw, alongside extensive overhead extraction ducting. By utilizing accurate 3D modelling, we ensured the steel frame provided maximum unencumbered floor space and the exact clearances needed for these mechanical installations, as well as the large roller-door access points required for constant material handling.
Additionally, the structural steel needed to perfectly interface with an extensive Kingspan cladding system. The Tekla model incorporated all necessary fixing points and purlins to ensure a weather-tight, visually sharp exterior . Inside, the steelwork was finished in a vibrant red, contrasting cleanly with the bright workspace illuminated by integrated roof skylights. The seamless transition from our digital plans to the final erected structure highlights the innovative, clash-free workflow that MPG Ironworks brings to complex industrial builds

The NUA Arklow Saw Building stands out due to the flawless execution of its digital-to-physical workflow. By leveraging Tekla Structures, MPG Ironworks eliminated on-site clashes and ensured that the complex integration of the Kingspan architectural cladding and the heavy internal timber-processing machinery was handled seamlessly before the first piece of steel arrived on site. The project is a testament to meticulous standard detailing, which allowed for a highly efficient and safe erection phase. The finished building not only meets the rigorous, heavy-duty functional requirements of a modern automated sawmill—perfectly accommodating the CT600F machinery and its spatial constraints—but also delivers a polished, striking aesthetic with its signature red internal frame and clean green exterior. This build is a prime example of how precise structural detailing by MPG Ironworks directly translates to operational excellence, rapid construction times, and ultimate client satisfaction in the industrial sector.

UCD Lyons Dairy Calf Education and Research Facility
Dungarvan Precision Engineering
Fabricated a Portal Frame Unit 38.2m long in 6 No. bays by 21.1m wide by 4.8m high at eaves. The unit will be standing on 2no. lines of stanchions. Roof sheeted in 0.6mm agribild cladding, curragh green in colour including 2 No. safe span Perspex’s per bay with a metal ridge flashing fitted at apex. Yorkshire boarding double skin fitted on both sides and both gables sheeted to the walls as per drawing. less 11no. door opes. Barges & flashings supplied and fitted to match the cladding plus 2 No. runs of 152mm box galvanised box gutters, with 4 No. stacks of grey wavin down pipes. Supply and fit 5 No. sliding doors, running on single track system with all necessary running gear. Includes door guides, handles, drop bolts and stock board fitted 1.2m up from the bottom of each door.
