Project Gallery

Construction of a new state of the art public library with rooftop outdoor terrace space to serve the growing population and provide upgraded library services to Citywest and its surrounding areas.

The Story

The aim of the Citywest Project was to provide new facilities to a rapidly growing and expanding urban Dublin hub. The project included repurposing and renovation of an already existing building along with the renovation and construction of new levels to add additional space to the building.

As part of the already existing Citywest shopping centre, works involved a welcome addition to the space in the form of a new state of the art Library. The new library which spans over 3 floors, will provide better services to Citywest and the surrounding communities as part of a wider community facilities improvement scheme. Works on this project consisted of construction and fit out of various new floors within the already existing building for Fingal County Council.

The Forge Mechanical Engineering collaborated with the client and their Design team to construct the new 1600 square meter facility that houses the new 635 sq m library facility. The project created an additional 2 new floors within the Citywest shopping complex, of which the new state of the art library spans over, together with a new west facing terrace which will provide a quiet outdoor reading space for library goers.

Working alongside our client, our involvement in the project included the structural work from existing concrete, fabrication of steel for the additional new levels, purlins and decking.

Our team drafted, fabricated and installed all structural steel elements including:

• Roof Feature Canopy Steel

• Roof Level Structural Steel

• External Roof Faceted Steelwork

• Additional Level Structural Steel

Materials used in the finished building included:

• Mild steel sections

• Roof Purlins

• Composite decking

Why It Should Win

This project is a great example of how the construction industry contributes to the wider community by providing them with much needed new/upgraded facilities. Working alongside the client, our aim on this project was to create a new library facility capable of serving 35,000 people with an environmental green space in the form of a rooftop garden terrace.

It is a major addition to the people of the area, as up until now Library services have been provided in the form of a weekly mobile library service. Utilising the normally wasted roof space of a building by fitting it out with a garden terrace, gives the community back some outdoor space in a world where urban area green spaces are rapidly being replaced by buildings. We also, as part of the construction industry felt it was rewarding to be part of a project which aims to improve community facilities for the future generations.

From our perspective as the steelwork specialist, the project pushed our boundaries in many ways. Allowing for the design and tolerances with the faceted mild steel sections posed a challenge due to the manufacturing and detailing required to complete these curved areas on the canopy and roof areas. There were also challenges for our site team when it came to installation. As this project while ongoing was a live site with pedestrian footfall, passing traffic and footpaths beneath, logistics and planning had to be thought out for this to ensure public health and safety on the public space underneath at ground level.
