GraepelStrade: A Patented New Way to Build Balustrades
Graepels
Finalist in: Initiatives – Innovation
The Story
Graepels deserves this award because we challenged a long-accepted construction process and developed a patented solution that rethinks how balustrade systems are manufactured, supplied and installed.
For decades, the balustrade industry has relied on a similar approach: separate handrails, uprights, infill panels and mounting components fabricated individually before being assembled in workshops or on site. While effective, this process is labour-intensive, time-consuming and often prone to the alignment and fitting issues that contractors and fabricators encounter every day.
Rather than accepting these challenges as part of the process, Graepels asked a simple question: what if the balustrade could be engineered as one integrated product instead of multiple fabricated components?
That question led to the development of GraepelStrade.
GraepelStrade is a patented integrated balustrade system that combines what would traditionally be separate handrails, uprights and infill panels into a single engineered pressing. By fundamentally redesigning the product architecture, we have simplified the manufacturing process and reduced the number of components required to create a complete balustrade system.
The innovation is significant because it addresses challenges faced throughout the construction supply chain. Fabricators frequently spend valuable time manufacturing, aligning and assembling multiple parts. Installers often encounter fitting and tolerance issues on site, resulting in delays, rework and additional labour costs. GraepelStrade reduces these challenges by delivering a ready-to-install solution that removes much of the complexity traditionally associated with balustrade construction.
Importantly, GraepelStrade is not simply another modular balustrade system. Many modular systems still require separate handrails, posts and infill panels to be assembled together. Our innovation goes further by integrating these elements into a single manufactured pressing before the product reaches site. The result is a more efficient, repeatable and streamlined solution that reduces fabrication, installation time and project risk.
The impact extends beyond efficiency. GraepelStrade showcases how specialist manufacturing expertise can be transformed into a higher-value engineered product. Built on Graepels' long-standing leadership in perforated metal manufacturing, the system has enabled the company to diversify into new construction markets, including residential developments, public infrastructure, commercial projects and modular construction.
The product also delivers long-term value for clients. By utilising durable perforated metal, GraepelStrade offers a robust, low-maintenance alternative to traditional infill materials, reducing cleaning requirements and improving resistance to damage and vandalism while maintaining architectural appeal.
The originality of the concept has been recognised through patent protection in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with European patent protection progressing through the grant process. This validates the innovation and reinforces its commercial potential within domestic and international markets.
Most importantly, GraepelStrade demonstrates what Irish manufacturing does best: identifying real industry challenges and developing practical, scalable solutions that create value. It reduces complexity, improves efficiency, supports modern methods of construction and opens new opportunities for growth.
GraepelStrade is more than a new product. It is a new way of thinking about balustrade design, manufacture and installation, delivering measurable benefits for fabricators, contractors, developers and end users alike. That combination of innovation, diversification and industry impact is why Graepels deserves recognition with the Irish Steel Extra Mile Award.
