The Story
Black Rock Prefabricated Plantroom
When Hayes Mechanical & Engineering was engaged to deliver the BRC Plantroom project at Blackrock Clinic, Dublin, for Titanium Developments , the brief carried a challenge that couldn't be solved with a standard mechanical installation approach: sensitive medical equipment operating close to heavy rotating plant, on a suspended concrete floor, in a live clinical environment.
Rather than treating vibration control as an afterthought, HME's team developed a vibration-tuned composite concrete floor solution engineered specifically for this installation — integrating structural design, plant layout, and mechanical isolation from the outset. This required close collaboration between our project engineering, site supervision, and external structural consultants to model and validate the floor's dynamic response before a single beam was fixed. The result is a plantroom floor that performs to the precision a clinical setting demands, without compromising mechanical layout or future maintenance access.
The second innovation was in the plant lift itself. Installing plant of this scale — a 28–30 tonne crane lift — within the tight physical and operational constraints of an active hospital site required a temporary lifting arrangement that had never been used in this exact configuration before. HME worked directly with SDS Engineers to develop and certify a bespoke temporary lifting solution, and when reviewer queries were raised on the submission, our team produced a full Technical Response Report to demonstrate the engineering rationale and safety case in detail. This was original problem-solving under real site constraints, executed with full engineering rigour and third-party certification.
What sets this initiative apart is the collaborative process behind it. HME coordinated across our own engineering and site teams, the client, structural engineers, and the hospital's operational requirements, to deliver a solution satisfying structural, mechanical, and clinical demands simultaneously — on a live site where disruption had to be minimised at every stage.
The impact has been significant: a plantroom meeting exacting vibration and structural performance criteria in a setting where that precision genuinely matters, delivered safely and to programme despite the technical and site complexity involved. The methods developed here — the vibration-tuned floor approach and the certified temporary lifting process — represent a repeatable innovation for HME on future projects involving sensitive plant in constrained or occupied environments.
This project demonstrates what's possible when a contractor treats engineering challenges as opportunities for genuine innovation rather than problems to work around — and HME believes it deserves recognition for the technical creativity, collaboration, and rigour that went into solving them.
