Redevelopment of Ceannt station

The Story

Design detail and fabrication of multiple steelwork buildings in Ceannt station in the heart of Galway city.

Subcontract included the design, fabrication and installation of multiple smaller buildings throughout the station including the new entrance facades and canopies ultimately falling under the centre-piece of the project, the Main station roof.

This roof consisted of 30 no.25 meter long rolled Rectangular Hollow section Trusses, each one designed in 3 main sections fabricated in Co. Louth and transported by by an escorted Low-Loader during the night to Ceannt station.

They were assembled on site with a 200 ton crane, some weighing 5 ton and fitted at night over live tracks.

Specification for same was using full penetration butt welds, ground flush, which were then painted to Irish Rail P3 ,three coat paint system to approved paint specification.

The roof was fitted between the live tracks and joined to the live Hardiman Hotel at either end.

Trusses were then braced together with hundreds of Circular Hollow section braces and Stainless steel Macalloy adjustable threaded rods.

This roof design was copied but in a smaller scale to cover the Engine shed which was then roffed in Zinc.

Each roof was designed to align with with existing walls and curved arches and columns which were to be maintained to their original glory built in the 1900s with movement joints each side of the structure.

Why It Should Win

The Design of the main roof steel to incorporate the Designs teams wishes of hidden welds whilst still maintaining the structural integrity of the Trusses was like no other project we have ever completed.

The hundreds of man hours of polishing and grinding welds over the months of fabrication were made worthwhile when we seen the finished project, like no other in the country.

The first Truss of each Phase of installation could not support itself without temporary works bracing until its sister truss was installed for support.

The Transport across the country in itself with a wide load escorted lorry during the night to tie in with our erectors and Crane supervisors on site.

The attention to detail by the Design Team and our own designers and fabrication team was to a standard like no other in our History.
