Project Gallery

OMC were contracted to design manufacture and install Pergola & planters to Level 10 roof terrace 2GCQ. 2 Grand Canal Quay is a high-end, next-generation office tower built to attract big global firms to Dublin. It stands out because of: • Its size and prominence in the Docklands skyline (basement + 15 floors) • Basement includes parking, bike storage, showers, and plant areas • Upper floors are flexible, designed for single HQ tenant or multi-tenant use • Strong sustainability credentials • Premium design aimed at modern hybrid workplaces

The Story

The roof terrace was designed by de Blacam and Meagher Architects (DeBM) in collaboration with Fearon O’Neill Rooney (FORN) engineers.

Working closely with DeBM, FORN, John Sisk & Son, and Shamrock Roofing, the project presented significant logistical challenges, as the only access to the roof level was via a mobile tower crane.

The pergola structure and circular planters were carefully designed and fully fabricated off-site. This included complete pre-assembly prior to galvanising and finishing (painting) to ensure quality and fit. The elements were then dismantled, transported, and reassembled on-site at roof level using crane access.

This coordinated approach ensured efficient installation while maintaining high standards of finish and structural integrity despite the constrained site conditions.

Why It Should Win

This project stands out as an exceptional achievement in design, engineering, and delivery. Positioned approximately 40 metres above the Docklands, the roof terrace transforms a challenging elevated space into a highly refined and functional environment.

The scheme demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail, with every element carefully considered and fully integrated into the overall design. From the discreet routing of internal cabling for lighting, to the structural precision of the Macalloy bracing system, each component reflects a commitment to both performance and aesthetics.

A rich and carefully curated palette of materials enhances the project’s quality and complexity. These include hardwood timber joists, a glazed roof structure, and bespoke aluminium planters, all working together to create a cohesive and contemporary architectural expression.

What truly distinguishes the project is the seamless coordination between design intent and execution. Despite the logistical challenges of constructing at height, the final result delivers a high-quality, durable, and visually striking space that exemplifies innovation, craftsmanship, and collaboration.
