The Story
The Lucan Village Green upgrade forms the centrepiece of South Dublin County Council's wider Villages and District Centres and Active Travel enhancement programme.
The scheme sought to transform the village green from a space fragmented by vehicular movement into a cohesive, accessible and vibrant civic destination that prioritises placemaking, connectivity, biodiversity and public enjoyment.
Located within the historic core of Lucan Village and adjacent to the Griffeen River, the project required the sensitive integration of contemporary architectural interventions within a highly visible and environmentally significant setting.
Our scope included the fabrication and installation of the feature bandstand structure, illuminated stainless steel handrails, architectural river guarding, structural glass balustrades and a wide range of bespoke stainless steel and architectural metalwork elements integrated throughout the public realm.
These features were designed to complement new paving, seating, planting, accessibility upgrades and sustainable urban drainage infrastructure while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
A defining challenge of the project was the complexity of coordinating numerous bespoke elements across a site characterised by varying ground levels, sloping terrain and multiple interfaces. Every component required careful consideration of finished paving levels, drainage falls, lighting installations, landscaping features and accessibility requirements.
Particularly challenging was the design and delivery of the cantilevered steel and glass river guarding overhanging the Griffeen River. These installations were required to satisfy stringent public safety requirements, including a 3.0kN/m horizontal line load, while maintaining a visually elegant appearance appropriate to the riverside setting. Achieving this balance demanded detailed structural analysis, careful material selection and precise fabrication tolerances.
The project incorporated a sophisticated combination of stainless steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and structural glass. Particular attention was paid to the detailing of material interfaces, corrosion resistance and long-term durability within an exposed public environment. Every handrail, balustrade section, glass panel and support structure was individually developed to suit its specific location, resulting in a highly bespoke project where standardisation was largely impossible.
The completed scheme successfully delivers South Dublin County Council's objectives of placemaking, active travel connectivity, accessibility and environmental enhancement. By combining innovative engineering with high-quality architectural metalwork, the project has transformed Lucan Village Green into an open and welcoming civic space that strengthens the relationship between the village centre and the Griffeen River while creating an enduring asset for the local community. It stands as an excellent example of how metalwork can help create infrastructure that is simultaneously functional, durable and architecturally distinctive.
Why It Should Win
The Lucan Village Green Project demonstrates how steel can be used not only as a structural material, but as the defining architectural feature of a transformative public realm scheme. At the heart of the project is the striking bandstand, a highly bespoke structure that has become the visual centrepiece of the revitalised village green and a landmark destination within Lucan.
While the completed structure appears elegant and effortless, its delivery required significant engineering expertise and fabrication skill. The bandstand is formed from heavy rolled circular hollow section steel members, including curved columns and cross-members that create its distinctive geometry. Powder-coated aluminium shingles and bespoke curved guttering provide shelter while creating a unique architectural form that has become a focal point (and talking point!) for the community.
The project also showcases the strength of collaboration within the Irish steel industry. Delivering such a bespoke structure required the expertise of specialist supply-chain partners, including EliteForm Manufacturing, who produced the complex curved guttering system, and Dairytube Engineering, whose advanced tube laser and rolling capabilities were invaluable in achieving several elements throughout the scheme. The successful outcome demonstrates how collaboration between Irish Steel members can unlock solutions that would be difficult for any one company to achieve independently.
Beyond the bandstand, the project incorporates bespoke stainless steel handrails, structural glass balustrades and architectural metalwork integrated throughout a complex sloping site. Extensive coordination was required between our design team, paving, lighting, landscaping and drainage to achieve the seamless finished result.
Combining innovative engineering, exceptional craftsmanship, architectural ambition and industry collaboration, Lucan Village Green showcases the very best of Irish steel design and fabrication. The project delivers lasting social value, strengthens local identity and demonstrates how the Irish steel sector can work together to create infrastructure that is functional, durable and inspiring. It is a worthy recipient of an Irish Steel Award.
