Suspended Helical Stairs . This magnificent stairs in Google Bolands Mills is manufactured from curved steel stringers and suspended from the main structure by special Macalloy rods . LED lighting and stainless steel cables are a big feature of the balustrade. Polished stainless steel handrails and stone treads complete the look

The Story

OMC were delighted to be awarded specialists contractor for several steel stairs in Google's new building in Bolands Mills Dublin. The Helical stair presents an immediate challenge regarding access into an existing building. Through several design workshops with the architect, engineer and main contractor , OMC proceeded to produce working drawings and 3 D models. The 3D models allow us to design the stair in sections and using the latest animation software, we can check each section fits through the designated routes. The stair was manufactured and assembled in our workshop to ensure a precision fit on site. All stair sections are carefully placed on special lifting frames to ensure there is no distortion to the curves during loading, transport and lifting on site. Our skilled installation team transport all sections into the building and begin the installation process. Each section is carefully hoisted into place using specialist equipment, checked for tolerance and secured onto the Macalloy suspension rods. This process is repeated until the stair is complete. Macalloy rods are tensioned in accordance with recommended guidelines. Stainless steel wires are added as the balustrade. Curved & Polished stainless steel handrails are added. The stair receives a full survey and inspection prior to being handed over to the client for specific floor finishes and LED lighting.

Why It Should Win

We believe this stair is worthy of winning due to its complex curves. The inner stringer was formed to a very tight radius . The stair was installed in the Google building as part of the interior fitout which made it very difficult to get it into the building. All our site rigging skills were put to the test to get this stair in and installed. The use of Macalloy rods to suspend the stair was an engineering challenge.
