Fabricate and fit of mild steel balustrades and wall rails to Google Treasury Building, with dual colour balustrade panels.

The Story

This was a challenging project, and one our team relished the opportunity to take on. The building has been extended repeatedly since its original construction, with staircases dating from the 1920s, 1970s, and 2024 — each built to different dimensions and in different concrete. This meant every flight had to be individually surveyed to millimetre accuracy, with close attention to detail essential throughout.

Each balustrade panel was cut from 8mm steel plate and folded to shape, then powder coated black on one face. Operatives carefully masked the coated steel to allow the remaining surfaces to be primed and top-coated in wet paint, achieving a precise dual finish on every panel. The handrails were fabricated from rebated stainless steel tube with an integrated LED light insert, while every wall rail bracket was individually made and fitted to accommodate the building's uneven historic walls, before being powder coated to complete the finish.

Installing the balustrades presented its own demands: with no two staircases alike, every panel required meticulous fitting to ensure it aligned and sat level with its neighbours across multiple floors — a standard maintained consistently throughout the build.

Why It Should Win

This project deserves recognition for the exceptional standard of work delivered by the entire team at Tara Steel & Engineering. We worked alongside an architect who set an exacting brief, one our team met and exceeded at every stage. Our drawing office collaborated closely with the architect through numerous design iterations to reach a solution that satisfied both the technical and aesthetic requirements of the build. Every individual involved in fabricating the balustrades brought a high level of skill and care to the work, and our site teams overcame the inherent challenges of a historic building to deliver a finish of outstanding quality — a genuine testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of everyone involved.
