Marmion Engineering | Maria Goretti boundary railings and gate

Finalist In: Finished Projects | Architectural Metalwork - Boundaries (Gates, Railings, Doors, Fences, Screens etc.)
Project Story:

The Maria Goretti Foundation was established by the Hanlon Family in Greenore as a respite centre for disabled children. In November 2024, we were honoured to be asked to design and fabricate a railing, gate, and sign for the facility. The only brief from the family was to create something simple yet elegant to enhance the front of the building, with a sign to display the respite’s details.

Following multiple drawings and sample sections, a final design was chosen. Each railing section required precision fabrication to achieve sharp 90-degree corners — all 740 of them — maintaining a clean, modern appearance. The railings were fabricated from 20×20 solid square bars, 50×10 horizontal rails, and 50×50 box posts.

All components were galvanised and powder coated.

The gate was designed to match the height of the railings (1800mm) for safety, and featured a glass section for visibility. The sign was incorporated into the gate’s centre. As the gate opens and closes frequently (over 48,000 movements on the previous gate), it was automated by PMM Security using a 2-ton CAME motor.

The frame was made from mild steel box section and sheeted with 3mm aluminium, all powder coated. The sign design aimed to be the visual focal point, featuring a “sweet wrapper” style for a friendly aesthetic.

It was constructed with two runs of 50×10 flat bar held apart by 20mm square bars, with the main plate made from 6mm aluminium, copper powder coated, and backed with polished stainless steel. A 40mm void housed LED strips for night-time illumination.

We are very proud of the outcome and grateful to have been part of such a meaningful project.

The Nominee Says

We are a small family company set up in 2005. Even though we get a lot of work locally , in the 20 years we are in business we have never had so many kind comments as we have had for this project it was under the spotlight as the respite is a massive part of the community and on the edge of the main road leading from the peninsula .

This project brought all the team together due to the importance of this facility so everyone gave 100 percent . Our business is well know for going the extra mile for our customers from design , colour choice and the “everything is achievable” attitude .

As mentioned our company is a family company its not just a job its hopefully a future to hand on to our children and we think that this project is well deserving of an award and the growth of the business for the future generations will benefit from it .

I appreciate your time taken to go through this application
