Bespoke Flat Bar Fall Arrest and Stainless Steel Handrails

The Story

Mercy Convent, Naas presented an opportunity to demonstrate how architectural steelwork can enhance both the functionality and character of an educational environment.

Coughlan Engineering was appointed to design, manufacture and install the bespoke stair balustrades and handrail systems forming the building's principal circulation spaces.

The primary challenge was not structural complexity, but achieving compliance without compromise. Educational settings demand robust fall protection and anti-climb measures, yet these requirements can often result in heavy, institutional-looking barriers that diminish the quality of the space.

The design solution combines powder-coated steel balustrades with stainless steel handrails in a carefully proportioned arrangement of vertical flat bar fins. The balustrades perform three distinct functions simultaneously: providing fall protection, satisfying anti-climb requirements, and acting as an architectural screen that defines and frames the stairwell. The open fin arrangement maintains transparency and allows natural light to flow through the building, preventing the circulation spaces from feeling enclosed or oppressive.

Particular attention was given to proportion, detailing and visual weight. Every connection and transition was developed to minimise clutter and create a refined appearance, ensuring the steelwork complemented the architectural vision rather than dominating it. The carefully selected colour palette further softens the installation and contributes to a warm, welcoming environment.

The finished installation demonstrates how a safety-critical element can become an integral part of the architecture. By balancing durability, accessibility, compliance and aesthetics, the project transforms a conventional stair balustrade into a defining feature of the building. The result is a solution that feels elegant and understated while quietly delivering the performance, longevity and safety standards demanded of a modern educational facility.

The Mercy Convent stair balustrades successfully balance competing demands for safety, accessibility, durability and aesthetics within a busy educational environment. Rather than relying on heavy or institutional solutions, the design uses carefully detailed steelwork to provide fall protection, anti-climb compliance and architectural screening in a single elegant system.

What makes the project particularly successful is its restraint. The steelwork performs a critical safety function while allowing natural light, openness and the vibrant feature artwork to remain the focal points of the space. The finely proportioned vertical fin arrangement creates transparency and visual rhythm, contributing positively to the building's character rather than dominating it.

This was a good team effort that required excellent execution in the design office, on the factory floor and on site. If any one performed below par, leading to one single misalignment the project was at high risk of looking sloppy or incongruous.
