The Story
The Demesne Park Entrance Project formed a key element of South Dublin County Council's Lucan Village Public Realm and Active Travel Scheme, creating a distinctive new western gateway to both Lucan Village and Demesne Park.
The project was conceived not simply as an infrastructure upgrade, but as a place-making initiative focused on universal accessibility, heritage preservation, public safety and the creation of a welcoming civic destination.
The completed works include a landmark entrance portal, bespoke illuminated signage, architectural screens, seating installations, balustrades, handrails and associated public realm features surrounding a new circular plaza.
The plaza was created through the selective removal of sections of the existing boundary wall, improving visibility, passive surveillance and pedestrian connectivity while providing a gathering space for residents, visitors, walkers and cyclists.
The space also incorporates provision for public art and acts as an important transition point between Lucan Village and the park.
At the top of the scheme is a striking gateway portal measuring approximately 7 metres wide by 4.7 metres high. Clad in contrasting red and green stainless steel architectural panels, the portal establishes a strong visual identity and serves as a contemporary landmark while respecting the heritage setting of the village and adjacent parkland.
From an engineering and fabrication perspective, the project was exceptionally challenging. The site incorporates multiple intersecting gradients and varying finished ground levels, requiring every architectural element to be individually coordinated relative to paving, landscaping, lighting and accessibility requirements. Achieving consistent visual lines, offsets and proportions across a site that slopes in multiple directions demanded extensive design coordination and meticulous setting out.
The project featured a high degree of bespoke manufacture. Virtually no two components were identical. Architectural cladding panels, signage elements, seating structures, balustrades and screens were individually detailed, manufactured and installed to suit precise slopes and paving alignment. This level of customisation required intensive collaboration between the design team, paving contractors, electricians and specialist suppliers throughout the project lifecycle.
Particularly noteworthy were the bespoke seating installations, including the curved cantilevered feature bench and integrated fall-arrest/backrest structure. Weighing approximately three tonnes, the installation was optimised for structural efficiency and architectural elegance. The seating elements integrate steelwork and iroko timber to create durable, comfortable and visually distinctive public furniture.
Installation presented further challenges due to the variety of fixing substrates encountered across the site, including existing historic structures, remediated elements and new construction. Flexible fixing solutions were developed to accommodate differing substrate conditions while maintaining alignment and installation tolerances across the scheme.
The success of the project ultimately lay in the team's ability to translate an ambitious architectural vision into a buildable, durable and elegant reality. Through detailed 3D coordination and collaboration with all stakeholders, our project was delivered on budget and to a high standard of craftsmanship, leaving an indelible mark on the public realm.
The completed scheme now provides Lucan with a memorable civic gateway that enhances accessibility, strengthens connections between the village and park, improves public safety and creates a vibrant community destination. It demonstrates how architectural steelwork can play a central role in placemaking, heritage-sensitive design and the delivery of high-quality public infrastructure.
Why It Should Win
What distinguishes this project is the extraordinary level of complexity hidden behind its apparent simplicity. Every major component was bespoke. From the 7m-wide landmark gateway portal and illuminated signage to the curved seating installations, balustrades and screens, virtually no two elements were identical. The project demanded precise coordination across a challenging multi-directional sloping site, requiring all components to align perfectly with varying finished levels, paving interfaces, lighting infrastructure and accessibility requirements.
The engineering team successfully integrated galvanised and powder-coated steel, stainless steel, aluminium, structural glass and iroko timber into a cohesive design that balances longevity, maintainability and visual refinement. Particularly notable is the three-tonne cantilevered feature bench and integrated fall-arrest structure, which demonstrates how steel can achieve both structural performance and architectural elegance.
The project also delivered significant community value. It provides a landmark gateway to Lucan Village and Demesne Park, improves accessibility and passive surveillance, enhances pedestrian and cycling connectivity, and creates a welcoming civic destination that strengthens local identity and sense of place.
Delivered on budget through meticulous design coordination and collaboration with architects, contractors, paving specialists and electrical designers, the Demesne Park Entrance Project is a showcase of how steel can elevate public realm design. It demonstrates innovation, technical excellence, craftsmanship and lasting social impact—qualities that make it a deserving winner of an Irish Steel Award.
