𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀
There are working partnerships, and then there are the ones that quietly shape who you become as a company. For O'Carroll Engineering, the relationship with Liebherr Container Cranes — spanning more than 30 years — falls firmly into the second category. Founded in Killarney in 1958 as the first Liebherr manufacturing plant outside of Germany, Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. designs, manufactures, and exports container-handling equipment to ports and terminals in nearly 50 countries worldwide. Their ship-to-shore cranes are among the most technically demanding pieces of capital equipment built in Ireland — precision-engineered machines operating in some of the world's busiest ports, where if a crane goes down, a port goes down. That is what uptime means at this level.
Every crane that leaves Cobh/Fenit port carries, as part of its structure, a comprehensive system of industrial access: covered ladders, guard railings, platforms, handrails, walkways, stairs, and structural supports — designed to provide safe access across the full height and reach of machines that rise more than 60 metres from the ground. These are not bolt-on afterthoughts. They are structurally engineered sub-assemblies, built to exact specification and subject to the same engineering scrutiny as the crane itself. For over 30 years, fabricating those sub-assemblies has been O'Carroll Engineering's responsibility.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀
The numbers, on their own, tell part of the story. In a typical 12-month period, O'Carroll Engineering produces approximately 260,000 precision-cut component parts and 18,000 individual assemblies for this programme alone. Combined, that represents approximately 1,200 tonnes of fabricated steel. All of it is manufactured off-site at O'Carroll Engineering's 11,000 m² facility in Killarney, then shipped directly to the port and designed to install efficiently onto the crane structures — without trial fit. Every assembly arrives at the correct dimension, in the correct sequence, and goes straight on. The time saved on-site by the client is not a side benefit; it is a core part of what O'Carroll Engineering is contracted to deliver.
Achieving zero trial fit, at that volume, year after year, is not something that just happens. It comes from a digitised design-to-fabrication process that has been built and refined over decades — and tested against one of the toughest programmes in Irish manufacturing.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀
Each project begins with Liebherr Container Cranes' engineering drawings, which carry complex geometry, tight tolerances, and configuration variations specific to each individual crane order. O'Carroll Engineering's in-house engineering and technical drawing team works through those drawings and translates them into fabrication-ready models, integrating BIM data to ensure every component is dimensionally correct before a single cut is made.
From there, approved drawings are integrated with 3D laser cutting machines and CNC cutting equipment to produce precision-cut kits of the individual parts. Running 260,000 parts a year through that process — with the repeatability and accuracy this programme demands — requires digital integration at every stage, not just at the cutting bed. It runs through design, sequencing, assembly, QC, and dispatch.
The technologically advanced fabrication process is carried out by an OCE Team of 192 skilled professionals, including in-house structural engineers, designers, quantity surveyors, welders, fitters, and a dedicated quality control function. Every stage of production is subject to a stringent, recorded QC process. The reported defect rate has been consistently maintained at best-in-class levels.
Products are manufactured predominantly in mild steel, with finishes applied to specification — predominantly galvanised or painted. Flat-pack and fully fabricated ready-to-install formats are both available, depending on programme requirements.

Ship-to-shore container cranes are built to order and assembled against tight delivery schedules, driven by the departure date of the specialised barges that ship the completed cranes to ports around the world. The ultimate deadline – as the saying goes, time & tide wait for no man. The access systems and walkways are part of the finished, pre-tested machine — they are not something that can be added later or caught up with on the next sailing.

The combination of 3D digital fabrication capability, a team of 192 skilled and experienced people, an 11,000 m² advanced facility (currently expanding), and 30-plus years of programme-specific process knowledge is not easily replicated.
In 2025, O'Carroll Engineering received the Irish Steel Association "Extra Mile Award" for Innovation in
Manufacturing Systems — recognition that speaks directly to the process disciplines that underpin this industrial programme.
