The Story
The Crossings Shopping Centre is Dublin’s newest retail offering located in the heart of Adamstown.
This new neighbourhood has been designed with 11,000sqm retail space and 975 residential units, as a place to shop, dine, relax, work out, entertain, and live every day. At its core, is a central urban plaza designed to bring the neighbourhood to life and will play an important role in promoting a destination where people spend more time and a place where a community interacts daily.
Graepels were approached in February 2020 by Henry J Lyons, Bespoke Glazing Solutions and Graepels worked closely with the Design Team to reverse engineer the project, to simplify the details and achieve the striking imagery, based on the Architects requirements.
Project manufacture and Installation ran from March 2022 and the last panels were manufactured and sent to site in February 2023.
The Crossings used a combination or 'standard' Perforations with complex folds and Picture Perf which was to be backlit for the west elevation. The panels were finished in a specialised Metallic RAL Colour Tiger Drylac 068-90354 Marrone 630.
With the design inspiration coming from nature and our native landscape, these stunning panels are going to elevate the façade once installed and illuminated.
The project consisted of 1,631 panels, 3613m2 - most of which were over 3.6 meters high were fitted to a tailored sub-frame, 220 No. were Picture Perf, and 210 No. were cross-folded in a single panel to achieve the ‘kicked’ cladding. These diagonal folds catch the light and increase the % Open Area.
Specialized tooling and machinery were instrumental in achieving this smoothly run production. The main panels achieved over 51% open area.
Why It Should Win
Graepels deserves to win the IASF award for their Perforated Metal Cladding of 3,800m2 for Adamstown. The project used a combination of perforated panels and Picture perf.
Innovative Design: Graepels have combined functionality and aesthetics to create a visually striking and architecturally significant structure in the new urban development of Adamstown. Every single detail was looked at right down to the bespoke packaging to ensure the integrity of the complex folds. Each supporting piece was made especially.
Our designs not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the overall appearance of the building and local.
Functionality and Performance: Our perforated cladding offers effective ventilation, natural light filtration and security. The project involved site visits, multiple prototypes, complex folds, design considerations and innovation.
Collaborative Approach: Graepels has shown exceptional collaboration and communication skills throughout their involvement in the Adamstown project. They have worked closely with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders to understand their requirements and provide tailored solutions. From concept to completion this has been a massive team effort at Graepels. This collaborative approach has resulted in a highly successful outcome.
