Siggonstown Castle
F&M Whelan Engineering
Finalist in: Steel Structures In Medium Construction Projects
The Story
When the steel works package to the restoration of Siggonstown Castle arrived to F&M Whelan we knew this would be an interesting project to work on. Siggonstown Castle appears to date back to the early 1500s. After the current owners obtained planning permission in October 2018, construction started in February 2019.
The owners approached F&M Whelan to design, fabricate and install structural steel to the refurbishment and restoration of the castle to be their new home. The original tower vault was to remain as well as the 17th century house. There were numerous onsite planning meetings to discuss sequence of works and installation methodology.
The scope of works included structural steel internally to existing structure and feature stairs.
It was critical to the construction to ensure that the existing walls were not hit or damaged during construction and installation of steel, F&M had to erect the columns and bring them up from the sub-floor, the steel structure then had to bear weight on the existing walls to provide support structurally due their age and prior to the roof being installed.
An unusual project such as the castle was a breath of fresh air for both the design team and the site crew and was an exciting project for F&M to be able to contribute to.
Why It Should Win
I believe Siggonstown Castle deserves to win the ISAF award as it an unusual project which allowed both the client and F&M Whelan to not only restore a piece of Irish history but also to refurbish it to now provide a family home for our client. To be able to contribute to some of our local history and heritage is extremely important to F&M Whelan.
