The Story

Tusker has been deeply rooted with the iconic Primark Building going back to 2016 when we were awarded the demolition of the Commonwealth House to allow Primark to expand into the rear of the Bank Building to increase floor space. The new extension was a concrete structure and Tusker erected the 30T for the 5th and final floor along with the new galvanised plant area in Galvanised steel.

In the years following 2017-2018 Tusker was awarded the contract of erecting the 60T of steel in the live environment in the business-as-usual shop which involved lots of limitations which Tusker had to adapt to reallocate the escalator project. All 60T of steel had to be loaded in off the street through the window and hoisted in with a spider crane.

A fantastic structure of an additional 30T of structural steel, sheeting and decking connected the new concrete extension to the original bank building, allowing a functional flow in the new store.

Tusker’s team were onsite on the day the devastating fire occurred in late August 2018, the project was nearing the final completion stages and thankfully with no injuries or fatalities the project came to a standstill.

Tusker Steelworks and Crane Hire teams were pulled in to ensure the safety and stability and preservation of historic features of this building.

Work was then carried out to complete the groundworks and piling along with the basement excavation which required a new concrete culvert to relocate the existing 1.5m high brick-built structure which runs tirelessly underneath the building.

During our Primark journey Tusker Construction Group set up our own Fabrication Facility and the first Tusker Structural steel in Primark was the 130T of temporary steel to support the iconic facade to allow Cregstone’s repair to get underway.

In early 2021 Tusker was awarded fabrication of the 600T of steel and metal floor decking for the restoration of this iconic Bank Building. The Tusker team designed, detailed, fabricated and erected this project ahead of schedule with many a night shift, and under delivery and noise restrictions.

All this work happened without any disruption to day-to-day footfall to the temporary Primark store in Commonwealth House.

Why It Should Win

Restoration of this iconic building that was feared to be lost after a devastating fire was preserved and restored with a lot of careful planning and diligence. It was brought back to its former glory with the enhanced benefits of the modern era construction methods.

During the Primark project and on our third annual audit in the Steel fabrication industry Tusker successfully obtained Execution class 4 accreditation.

This was a great achievement and this along with the challenges of working through bespoke issues that comes with a preserved building Tusker Construction Group with their adaptable experience excelled in this project. Allowing the external facade to be supported by the internal steel structure. Being part of this project and having a project manager that was heavily involved from 2016 to 2022 stood to the success of this project.
