IDS designed, manufactured and installed bespoke RP Technik steel glazed arched doors and fixed screens for the sensitive restoration of a historic stone property. Combining heritage aesthetics with modern thermal performance, each element was precision engineered to suit irregular masonry openings, delivering a contemporary solution that respects the character and craftsmanship of the original building.
The Story
The restoration of this historic stone property required far more than the replacement of doors and glazing. Every opening within the building was unique, with original masonry, brick arches and centuries-old construction presenting dimensional variations that made standard glazing systems unsuitable. The challenge was to introduce contemporary steel glazing that would enhance the architecture while preserving the authenticity and character of the existing structure.
IDS was appointed to design, manufacture and install a series of bespoke RP Technik Hermetic 70 steel glazed arched doors and fixed screens throughout the development. The project demanded exceptional precision, as each opening had to be individually surveyed and engineered to accommodate the irregular geometry of the historic building while maintaining consistent sightlines and architectural proportions.
From the earliest design stages, the IDS technical and R&D teams worked closely with the project stakeholders to develop solutions that respected the original fabric of the building without compromising on modern performance. Every steel frame was individually modelled, manufactured and finished in-house, allowing complete quality control throughout the production process and ensuring millimetre-perfect accuracy before installation.
One of the defining challenges was producing elegant steel glazing that followed the existing brick arches seamlessly. The slim steel profiles had to align perfectly with uneven stonework while incorporating modern insulated glazing, thermal performance and weather sealing. Achieving this balance between heritage aesthetics and contemporary engineering required extensive technical expertise and precision manufacturing.
The RP Technik Hermetic 70 system provided excellent thermal performance while maintaining the exceptionally slim steel sections essential to the architectural vision. Each glazed element was carefully fabricated, finished and inspected before installation, ensuring every door operated smoothly while integrating discreetly into the restored building.
Installation required equal precision. Historic structures rarely provide perfectly square or level openings, meaning every frame had to be positioned and adjusted with exceptional care. The IDS installation team worked methodically to preserve the surrounding stonework while achieving flawless alignment across every opening. The result is glazing that appears entirely at home within the building, enhancing rather than competing with its historic character.
What distinguishes this project is the seamless combination of traditional craftsmanship and advanced engineering. Behind the understated appearance lies extensive research, technical development and manufacturing expertise that enabled modern steel glazing to be successfully integrated into a protected heritage setting.
Today, the completed project demonstrates how contemporary steel glazing can respectfully transform historic architecture. The bespoke arched doors flood the interior with natural light while retaining the strength, elegance and authenticity of the original buildings. The precision-engineered steel frames create a refined architectural statement that will serve the property for decades to come, proving that innovation and heritage conservation can work together in perfect harmony.
The project reflects IDS's commitment to delivering bespoke engineering solutions where no standard product could achieve the required outcome. Through design expertise, in-house manufacturing capability and meticulous installation, the team transformed a complex restoration challenge into a timeless architectural feature that complements one of the building's defining characteristics—its historic stone and brick craftsmanship.
Why It Should Win
Successful heritage restoration depends on respecting the past while delivering the performance expected of modern buildings. This project achieves that balance through exceptional engineering, craftsmanship and precision manufacturing.
Every steel glazed door and fixed screen was bespoke, designed specifically for irregular historic stone openings where no two apertures were identical. Rather than forcing standard products into a heritage building, IDS developed tailored solutions that preserved the original architecture while introducing contemporary thermal performance, security and durability.
The defining achievement of this project lies in its precision. The elegant arched steel frames align perfectly with centuries-old brick and stone arches, creating clean architectural sightlines despite the challenges of uneven masonry and historic construction. The finished installation appears simple and understated, yet conceals an extraordinary level of surveying, engineering, manufacturing and installation expertise.
What truly distinguishes this project is IDS's ability to deliver the entire process in-house. From technical design and research through to precision manufacturing, finishing and installation, every stage was controlled by the IDS team. This integrated approach ensured exceptional quality, accuracy and consistency while allowing rapid problem-solving throughout the project.
The project also demonstrates how modern steel glazing can enhance heritage buildings without compromising their character. The ultra-slim RP Technik steel profiles maximise natural light while maintaining the scale and proportions of the original openings. The result is contemporary performance wrapped within a design that feels entirely authentic to the building's historic fabric.
Innovation on this project was not about creating something visually extravagant; it was about solving complex technical challenges with subtle, intelligent engineering. Every component had to satisfy modern building performance standards while remaining visually secondary to the architecture itself. Achieving this level of restraint requires confidence, experience and technical excellence.
The installation demanded the same level of craftsmanship as the manufacturing process. Working within an existing historic structure required meticulous planning and careful execution to protect the surrounding masonry while achieving millimetre-perfect alignment. The completed installation sits naturally within the building, demonstrating the care and respect shown throughout the project.
This project showcases the qualities that define IDS: innovative thinking, precision engineering, in-house manufacturing capability and exceptional craftsmanship. It demonstrates that complex heritage restoration can successfully combine modern engineering with traditional architecture, creating solutions that are both technically advanced and architecturally timeless.
Rather than simply supplying steel glazing, IDS delivered a complete engineering solution that celebrates the building's history while ensuring it is equipped for generations to come. It is this combination of technical innovation, manufacturing excellence and respect for architectural heritage that makes this project worthy of recognition.
Project Team
This project was delivered through the combined expertise of the IDS design, engineering, manufacturing and installation teams, working closely with the client, architect, main contractor and specialist consultants throughout every stage of the project. The IDS R&D and technical design teams developed bespoke steel glazing solutions to suit each individual opening, overcoming the challenges presented by irregular historic masonry and ensuring the finished installation respected the original character of the building. Our in-house manufacturing team then precision engineered every steel frame to exact tolerances, while the finishing and quality control teams ensured each element met the highest standards before leaving the factory. The IDS installation team completed the project with exceptional care and craftsmanship, fitting each bespoke frame into the historic structure while preserving the surrounding stonework and achieving flawless alignment. The success of the project was made possible through the close collaboration and shared expertise of everyone involved, including: IDS Project Management IDS R&D and Technical Design Team IDS In-House Manufacturing & Finishing Team IDS Installation Team Architect and Design Team Main Contractor Structural Engineer Client and Project Stakeholders Together, the team delivered a technically demanding heritage glazing project that successfully combines traditional architecture with modern engineering, precision manufacturing and outstanding craftsmanship
