Project Story:

Tarbert Power Station – Utility Pipe Bridge Installation

KME was contracted by Duro Felguera to produce detailed construction drawings from client designs, fabricate, blast, and paint a 10-ton utility pipe bridge for installation at Tarbert Power Station. The structure was finished to RAL 7035 with a C5M paint specification for long-term durability in a harsh marine environment.

This technically demanding project involved a 20-metre span with two vertical sections (4.5m and 3.5m) designed to accommodate the uneven slope at the site.

Fabrication & Assembly

KME fabricated the horizontal span and one vertical section in-house. Due to its size, the bridge was transported in a partially assembled state using KME’s 45-foot trailer with front and rear vehicle escorts. A 4-metre overhang added complexity to logistics.

On-Site Installation

At Tarbert, a road closure was coordinated to allow for safe unloading. The final vertical section was assembled on-site. A 200-ton crane from GOB Crane Hire lifted the bridge into position. The installation required spanning a 15-metre-wide sea water intake and working 10 metres above the River Shannon. KME teams positioned on both sides maintained clear communication throughout.

The bridge was successfully installed late Friday evening and securely bolted into place.

Collaboration & Teamwork

This project highlighted seamless collaboration between KME’s fabrication and site teams, Duro Felguera engineers, Quantex Civil Contractors, and GOB Crane Hire. Every stage—from design to installation—demanded precise coordination, expert handling, and trust across all stakeholders.

The Nominee Says

This project is more than just a bridge—it is a symbol of engineering ingenuity, collaboration, and excellence in steel construction. KME’s bespoke 10-ton steel bridge for Tarbert Power Station is a masterclass in overcoming complexity, combining technical brilliance with innovative problem-solving to deliver a structure that stands as a benchmark for the industry.

Every aspect of this project demanded exceptional precision: from translating a challenging design into reality, to navigating marine conditions, uneven terrain, and the logistical challenges of transporting oversized steel elements. The high-risk crane lift, executed flawlessly, exemplifies the team’s unwavering commitment to safety and quality.

The success of this project was driven by the seamless partnership between KME, engineers, contractors, and crane specialists. Together, they delivered a structure that is not only durable and functional but also a testament to what can be achieved through meticulous planning, collaborative expertise, and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence.

This bridge reflects the very spirit of the Irish Steel Awards—pioneering craftsmanship, innovation, and the ability to transform ambitious visions into enduring realities.
