Project Story:

Honouring Titanic’s Legacy Through Picture Perf at Camden Fort Meagher

Commissioned by Cork County Council, Graepels Kinsale was entrusted with creating a unique, respectful tribute to the RMS Titanic at Camden Fort Meagher, overlooking Cobh — the ship’s final port of call. Using their signature Picture Perf technique, Graepels recreated the last known photograph of Titanic afloat, perforated into a curved marine-grade aluminium panel.

The project required a visually striking, historically sensitive installation that would blend with the fort’s heritage setting and engage both local and international visitors.

Working with cultural consultants and historians, the design was meticulously translated into thousands of precision-engineered perforations, achieving image clarity while allowing natural light to shift across its surface throughout the day.

Fabrication involved digital mockups, accurate cutting, and modular assembly. Panels were coated with a two-layer Qualicoat Seaside-grade polyester powder to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The slight radius increased structural strength and enhanced viewing angles.

Installation was completed over three weeks, with careful positioning to align with the sea line. The result is both a commemorative centrepiece and an educational tool, used by schools and heritage groups to explore Ireland’s maritime legacy.

It stands as a lasting tribute — merging engineering, storytelling, and place into a powerful public artwork.

The Nominee Says

The team behind Camden Fort Meagher is passionately dedicated to its preservation, with some volunteers having lived on-site. Their commitment to safeguarding this historic landmark inspired us at Graepels to donate the Titanic Picture Perf installation — not just as a tribute to the ship, but to honour the incredible people preserving the fort and its legacy.

This project goes beyond craft or fabrication. Located at a site overlooking Cork Harbour and Titanic’s final port of call, the installation connects deeply with Ireland’s maritime story — touching on themes of emigration, memory, and national identity. Its presence within a historic military site adds further meaning, creating a powerful backdrop for reflection and education.

Now a highlight for visitors, school groups, and heritage tours, the piece fosters community pride and meaningful dialogue. More than an artwork, it’s a legacy piece — one that honours the past while embracing innovation. This submission recognises not just the Graepels team, but also the volunteers who bring Camden Fort Meagher to life.
