Graepel Perforators and Weavers | Bike Shelter, Kilkenny
In Kilkenny, Graepels collaborated with Coughlan Engineering and Reddy Architects to deliver a standout bike shelter for State Street International. This project not only showcases architectural metalwork at its finest but also supports the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan by promoting cycling and eco-friendly transport.
The shelter’s defining feature is its bespoke perforated aluminium panels—108 in total—covering over 122 square metres. Developed closely with Reddy Architects, these panels feature a “Picture-Perf” motif of stylised cyclists, integrating function with artistic expression.
The perforation pattern was carefully engineered for visual clarity, airflow, and structural integrity.
Graepels used advanced digital design tools to achieve precise hole placement, ensuring both image readability and panel strength. The panels were coated with an environmentally friendly, corrosion-resistant finish, suitable for outdoor urban settings.
Fabricated over 150 labour hours, the panels were installed by Coughlan Engineering, requiring tight tolerances to align perfectly with the subframe.
The finished shelter is more than functional—it’s a statement of Kilkenny’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and creative urban design. It encourages cycling, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances public space through thoughtful, collaborative engineering.
A true fusion of sustainability, innovation, and community pride.
Let’s be clear — it’s a bike shelter, not a national scandal! Ours didn’t cost €336,000, to make, it didn’t need a review, and didn’t make the news.
But may just win an award!
Our bike shelter is just smart design, solid manufacturing, without drama.
Other reasons…
This project is a bespoke Picture-Perf design which showcases our capabilities and perforating techniques, transforming a functional piece into a contemporary work of urban art—a solid example of how metalwork can enhance public infrastructure.
The project’s demonstrates the scale and complexity—with over 122 square meters of intricately perforated panels—and highlights the attention to detail and our seamless collaboration with clients and partners. This project reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality results on time and within budget.
The project delivers on what matters: thoughtful design, practical function, and strong visual impact. It supports sustainable transport, enhances the streetscape, and showcases the potential of steel and aluminium in urban settings.
Graepels brought precision, creativity, and technical skill to the table — not just meeting the brief but ensuring it came to fruition. This is a real- world example of how architectural metalwork can shape better, more accessible public spaces.
It’s smart, useful, and built to last — everything a winning project should be.
